What brownstone does

Proudly based in Tennessee, Brownstone periodically invests, wholly or with others, in operating businesses or alternative investments with long time horizons.  We love recurring cash flow generated by making investments in companies that are out in the world adding value to end customers.

Brownstone tries to be both business and geographic agnostic in its investment search.  Even so, we acknowledge that most of our investments are geographically concentrated in the Southeast (something we are proud of) and admit that we are normally inclined to shy away from fixed cost-intensive businesses, as revenue headwinds do happen (we’ve made costly mistakes with heavy overhead in such windy seasons).

When partnering, Brownstone looks for people or firms that have a sterling character and are humble, that love business and investing and solving problems and continually learning, that have prior failures and prior successes, a willingness to ‘roll sleeves up’, and who will be a joy to work with when things are going well and when things aren’t.

Life is too short to have bad partners; it usually isn’t too short to make bad investments – though we try and keep those to a minimum.
